Hepatobiliary Intervention

What is Hepatobiliary Intervention

Hepatobiliary Intervention refers to minimally invasive procedures designed to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. These interventions provide targeted treatment, offering quicker recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional surgery.

Common Conditions Treated

Liver Tumors

Including benign cysts and malignant cancers.

Biliary Obstruction

Blockages in the bile ducts due to stones or strictures.

Pancreatic Lesions

Cysts or tumors affecting the pancreas.

Gallstones

Complications arising from stones in the gallbladder or bile ducts.

Key Interventional Procedures

1. Percutaneous Pranshepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD)

Purpose: Relieves bile duct obstruction and jaundice.
Procedure: A catheter is inserted through the skin into the liver to drain bile and relieve obstruction.

2. Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography (PTC)

Purpose: Diagnoses bile duct blockages and abnormalities.
Procedure: A needle is inserted through the skin into the liver to inject contrast dye, allowing X-ray imaging of bile ducts.

3. Biliary Stenting

Purpose:Keeps blocked bile ducts open.
Procedure: A stent is inserted into a blocked bile duct to keep it open and allow bile flow.

4. RFA for Liver Tumour

Purpose:Destroys liver tumors.
Procedure: Radiofrequency waves are used to heat and destroy liver tumors through a probe inserted into the liver.

5. Liver Biopsy

Purpose: Diagnose liver conditions.
Procedure: A needle is inserted into the liver to obtain a tissue sample for examination.

6.Transjugular Liver Biopsy

Purpose:Collects liver tissue when other methods fail.
Procedure: A catheter is inserted through the jugular vein to access the liver and obtain a tissue sample for biopsy.

7. TIPS Surgery

Purpose: Relieves portal hypertension.
Procedure: A shunt is placed between the portal vein and hepatic vein to reduce blood pressure in the portal vein.

8. Portal Hypertension Management

Purpose: Reduces high blood pressure in the portal vein.
Procedure: Treatments, including medications or procedures like TIPS, are used to lower blood pressure in the portal vein and manage complications.

Risks include bleeding, infection, or allergic reactions to contrast dye, but these are minimized with expert care.

Symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain, or abnormal liver function tests may indicate the need for evaluation and potential intervention.

Most interventions are performed under sedation or local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

Benefits of Hepatobiliary Intervention

     1.Minimally Invasive

      • Reduced recovery time and lower risk of complications.

     2.Precision Treatment

      • Targeted approach ensures effective management of specific conditions.

    3. Quick Recovery

      •  Patients often experience less discomfort and a faster return to daily activities.
